What You'll Learn in Mechanical Engineering @ U of T

Our world-class facilities and award-winning professors make U of T’s mechanical engineering program one of the best of its kind in Canada, and North America. As Canada’s largest mechanical engineering program, we offer you an extensive range of subjects and options where you benefit from our ground-breaking research and top academics. Within reach of your classroom is the industrial heartland of Canada, and the best research hospitals in the world. What better place to network and learn?

Fundamental courses in Years 1 and 2 include mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, materials science, plus complementary courses in the humanities. Essential to the curriculum is the incorporation of hands-on design. Upper-year courses incorporate your knowledge into topics such as biomechanics, aerospace, manufacturing, product design, environmental impact and risk assessment, robotics, space system design, microprocessors and embedded microcontrollers.

Engineering design and graphics is a favourite Year 3 course, exclusive to mechanical engineers. You learn and execute the fundamentals in creating great design through guest lectures, presentations and competitions. Every year students are challenged to create a product by tackling existing design flaws. Students then compete in a simulated trade-show and convince “buyers” to order their design.

You can choose two options at the end of Year 2. Our mechatronics option is the oldest in North America. If you select the mechatronics option, you will learn the principles of integrating electronics and software into a mechanical design in well-established labs supported by outstanding professors, support engineers and graduate students.

Your Year 4 thesis is a year-long research project that allows you to delve deeply into a topic of interest. During this exploration, you will receive guidance from a professor. You may decide to pursue a thesis topic relating to projects or work completed during your Professional Experience Year (PEY), or even through a student-based design team, such as the Blue Sky Solar Car, Formula SAE Car or Robocup
