　　少妇受不了丈夫的强烈占有欲，对她在身心两方面的长期折磨，于是千方百计布局假死，逃到爱荷华州展开新的人生。但当她逐渐安顿下来，并跟当地一位戏剧老师展开新的恋情时，百密一疏的小破绽揭破了她的假死秘密，引致丈夫循线索追踪到她的新居展开报复。这部由朱莉娅．罗伯茨担纲主演的惊怵文艺片，在悬疑性的布局上并不算出色，但导演约瑟夫．鲁宾掌握住“家庭暴力"的主题和通俗剧元素，拍出令女性观众相当容易共鸣的吸引力。后来有不少港台电视剧模仿本片的故事架构再加油添醋本地化，观众欣赏本片时可能会有似曾相识之感。
