It is an indisputable fact that the driving force behind the development of every society is generated by people from all walks of life, especially politicians and scientists. However, when it comes to who exerts greater influence on human society, opinions tend to vary. This essay aims to explore the issue from different perspectives and draw some suggestive conclusions.
No one can deny the fact that influential politicians constitute the major impetus in any social development. Acting as the representative of their citizens, these political leaders are supposed to make the wisest decision, manipulate the soundest policies and issue the fairest laws.
Winston Churchill, the greatest British Prime Minister during the Second World War, for instance, made the wisest decision by allying with the Soviet Union and rent armed forces from US to fight against Nazi. With his powerful speech delivered across the nation and preeminent diplomatic skills, he saved his people from the torture of Germany and managed to help end the Second World War, thus promoting the peace process worldwide.
On the other hand, Adolf Hitler, the infamous dictator of Nazi during the Second World War, initiated the terrible massacre against Jewish people and spread the ethnocentric views, holding that German is the most distinguished people in the world, which, of course,severely damaged the image of German on an international level.
At the same time, the role of scientists can never be underestimated since without their effort, hardly can we enjoy the convenience brought about by the newest technology which is basically initiated by their researches.James Watt, for instance, invented the steamer which became a trigger of the Industrial Revolution and marked the beginning of a new time: Age of Steam. Thomas Edison brought forth the first electrical bulb on our planet and enabled every household to enjoy infinite luminosity.Alexander Bell, father of the first telephone, shook the world with the dawning of telecommunicating era.
Nevertheless, besides being a blessing,science can also become a curse when it is manipulated with some unjustified purposes. P.E.A.Lenard, a German physical scientist who won the Nobel Price in Physics in 1905, became a persistent follower of Hitler and murder of thousands of Jewish people by producing some poisonous chemicals.
To conclude, scientists and politicians benefit our society in different ways and the saying that one way is superior to another seems to be fallacious. However,at the same time, we are supposed to be aware of the negative effects of both sides and take some precautions to prevent some potential disasters from happening.
