空间制冷技术是对温度特别敏感的航天器上的元、器件进行冷却,提供稳定低温环境的技术。各类红外探测元件和低噪声参量放大器必须在200K以下的低温环境中工作才能减小热噪声,获得不同波长的信号和实现高质量的信号转发。根据不同的制冷温度和功率要求,制冷方法有:辐射制冷、固体潜热制冷和机械制冷等方法。辐射制冷是利用物体的辐射能力将热量辐射到温度相当于4K的宇宙空间,从而降低物体本身的温度。这种方法的制冷设备简单,重量轻,无转动部件,不需要能源,因此可靠性高,寿命长。制冷温度在70~200K范围内,制冷功率为10~100毫瓦。美国“雨云”号气象卫星系列和“应用技术卫星”6号均采用辐射制冷法潜热制冷是利用贮存的固体或液体制冷剂升华或蒸发吸收环境热量来产生制冷效果。制冷温度可达到15K左右。机械制冷是利用机械将气体压缩,排除压缩热后再令气体膨胀,以达到制冷温度。这种方法制冷温度低,功率大,已用于美国的“天空实验室”上。
