《老人与海》却是一本能让人了解，什么才是真正的人生，什么才是坚强的书，一本实实在在的好书。在现实生活中，我们会不断地受到挫折、失败还有许多负面的情绪，许多人因此而消极、失去对生活的热爱。而《老人与海》却刻画出一个与大海搏斗，在艰难的环境下，奋力生活的老渔夫。大家应该记得，在书中提到过，老人的渔船上那破旧的帆布，就像是一面失败的旗帜，仿佛在宣告着老人永远都捕不到鱼的倒霉运气。但是，他没有放弃，仍然出海捕鱼。而在现实中，某些人却不能坚持，面对挫折就选择了放弃，选择了逃避。和那已经生活窘迫的老渔夫相比，那些逃避的人真的是不知道什么才是挫折。我们可能会因为考试的失利，而对自己失去信心。或者因为别人的批评，而自暴自弃。在那时候，想想这个坚强的老渔夫，他是如何面对生活的。自己的心，自然就会释然许多。
